Purchase Or Sell a Beautiful Goochland County Home

Goochland County is 290 square miles of Central Virginia's gorgeous Piedmont Region. The county originally stretched across the James River all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Now, it's predominantly rural and agricultural land bordered on the south by Powhatan County and 40 miles of the James River providing scenic beauty and exhilarating recreation. It's bordered on the east by Henrico County, the northeast by Louisa and Hanover Counties, and the northwest by Fluvanna County. The County has unique points of interest, a solid economy, a rich history, good public schools, and convenient access to the east coast highway corridor. Goochland County is a great place to live.

Goochland's Solid Economy Encourages Homeownership

Before the American Revolutionary War, Goochland's cash crop was tobacco. After the Revolution, tobacco wasn't as lucrative. They started harvesting more wheat. Wheat, corn, alfalfa, and soybeans are presently a big part of the county's agricultural economy. But everything's not agriculture in the area. West Creek Business Park is strategically located at the crossroads of Va-288 and West Creek Parkway. It has attracted CarMax- a fortune 500 used car retailer, The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Capital One, Luck Stone, Hallmark Youth Care, Performance Food Group, and The Farm Bureau of Virginia's corporate headquarters. Goochland's West Creek Business Park is continually attracting new tenants. Capital One employs 5600 people in the county. Luck Stone, a Goochland family owned quarry, employs 330 people and was founded in 1923. The areas economy has been strong and continues to evolve.

Transportation Infrastructure Feeds Goochland's Economy

The completion of the VA-288 loop around the Richmond Metro Area and it's connection to I-64 and I-95 in Goochland has had positive economic repercussions for the county. Another important route is US 250 on which one can go east to Richmond in 30 minutes, and west to Charlottesville in 1 hour. Originally, it was a Native American path called Three Chopt Trail because it was marked off by trees with 3 hatchet cuts. There's an Amtrak station across the county line in Henrico, There are 2 airports- Rose Retreat Airport and Stokes Airport.

Shop and Bank in Goochland County

The county has branches of Wells Fargo Bank, Jefferson National Bank, Essex Bank, and Bank of Goochland. Grocery shopping is available at Food Lion and other markets. But Goochland also offers unique alternatives to supermarket chains. Nadoski's Butcher Shop offers fresh premium meats, seafood, cheeses, and wines. Also, being in an agricultural community has its perks: great farmers' markets abound all over the county with fresh produce right form the source. High end and variety shopping is available across the Henrico border at Short Pump Mall.

Goochland is served by Goochland County Public Schools. US News reported 95% reading proficiency for the student body. The district has kept up with the times by supplying laptop, mobile, and desktop computers. The district has also adapted to an evolving economic environment by offering more vocationally oriented programs in Agriculture, Construction, Architecture, Arts, Communications, Business, Finance, Marketing, Military Science, Government, Corrections, Nursing, Health Science, Distribution, Logistics, and Information Technology. Goochland has 2 private Schools: Elk Hill School and Salem Christian School. Reynolds Community College has a campus in Goochland. Richmond has some of the nation's top universities 30 minutes away from Goochland.

Goochland Homeowners Helped Shape American History

In 1781 British General Charles Cornwallis marched through Goochland during the American Revolution and destroyed Elk Hill which was Thomas Jefferson's Goochland estate. General LaFayette, our hero helper from France, went back to France for more French help. He came back to America and blocked Cornwallis' at Yorktown while General George Washington prepared to fight the British with the help of French troops sent by King Louis XVI. On a American tour in 1824, Lafayette stopped off at Powell's Tavern in Goochland on his way to see Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. He was met with much revelry.

During the Civil War, Union Colonel Ulric Dahlgren planned to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond by freeing 12,000 Union prisoners from Richmond's Belle Island. In 1864, Dahlgren and his troops went looking for General Henry Wise at his house in Goochland. His daughter said he was in South Carolina. Really he was rushing to Richmond to warn Confederate troops of Dahlgren's intentions. Dahlgren and his men proceeded to the Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon's Goochland home at Sabot Hill. His wife invited them in for libations and hospitality. She knew what was going on. She detained them long enough for General Wise to warn the Richmond troops to take up defensive positions. The Confederate troops in Richmond defeated Dahlgren's blitz.

With all this amazing history, Goochland County Historical Society is a god-send for preserving artifacts and doing all they can to sustain local traditions. Though it has existed since 1968, the society didn't have a home until 1980 when the Goochland Board of Supervisors granted use of the Old Stone Jail which was built with stones dug up and hauled up the banks of the James River during construction of the James River & Kanawha Canal (circa 1833). This home doubles as the Cabell Library which is open to citizens for research in whatever areas they choose- from local aspects of The American Revolutionary War, to The Civil War, to religious movements of the 1800s, to one's personal genealogy, to studies of the Anglo-American slave trade. This society caps off the already amazing history of the county.

Goochland Has Its Own Rustic Style of Entertainment

The natural beauty of Goochland is entertainment enough. You can tube, canoe, or kayak when the water's not too fast on the James River. You can hike the trails, or play sports at Tucker Park at Maiden's Crossing. Visit historical Sabot Hill where the Confederate Secretary of War, James Seddon's house still stands. Enjoy family fun at the old style Goochland Drive-in. Sample delectable wines and craft beers at Elk Island Winery, Lickinghole Creek Brewery, or Midnight Brewery. Attend the Rassawek Spring Jubilee Wine and Heritage Festival featuring wines, microbrews, crafts, and entertainment. VA White Hawk Music Cafe has a rustic nineteenth century feel. Owned by professional musician Terry Hazelton, the cafe offers coffee, food, music, and even music lessons with instrument rental. The cafe has live bluegrass and county performances by local musicians each week.
